Ups and downs of Football

  • Ups and downs of Football

After another exciting week of football we are no closer to knowing who will win the A-League title in 2013/14.

Melbourne Hearts turn around continued with an exciting 1 nil win over competition front-runners Brisbane Roar. The League leaders have now lost two on the trot but still hold a 4-point advantage, but for last year’s premiers Central Coast, their chance to retain the title is slowly slipping away after Wellington smashed them.

Sydney has climbed up to 4th place while Newcastle remains in 8th, but only just. Newcastle's loss to Sydney on Saturday has seen them earn the tag of having the worst goal difference in the A-League and now they are only 2 points ahead of Perth Glory and Melbourne Heart who are sharing last spot.

It’s amazing that I am sitting here writing about a disappointing loss, when only 7 days ago the Jets played great game to defeat the League leaders away from home. But the old saying “a week is a long time in football” is certainly ringing loud and clear for the Newcastle Jets. Lack of creativity in the midfield has led to lack of goals and with their hot and cold form plaguing them all season I really can’t see Newcastle turning it around again. Mathematically they are still a chance of making the final series, but they really don’t deserve to get that far.

In saying all that, the Jets travel to Parramatta this weekend to take on 2nd place West Sydney Wanderers, so if they’re consistently inconsistent form continues this Sunday, then the Jets should win this game by a goal to nil, or even better Emile Heskey opens his account for the season and scores a hat-trick… somehow I don't see the latter happneing against West Sydney but you never know.

With only 5 games remaining in the regular season and 4-points out of the top six, can you see Newcastle climbing up the ladder and pushing for a finals birth or are they more chance of winning the wooden spoon?
