Following an exceptional two years at the helm of Sydney FC, the team is in the midst of preparing for a new era, with the departure of Graham Arnold to lead the Caltex Socceroos after the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Stepping up from within to take charge, Steve Corica certainly has very big boots to fill and inevitably, changes are already taking place in the squad he inherited.

One key figure who ends his second spell with the Sky Blues is David Carney, who was an instrumental figure during an exceptionally successful period for the team. After winning two consecutive Premiership titles, plus the 2017 Grand Final and a 2017 FFA Cup triumph, the 34-year-old departs with his head held high.

“I’ve given my all for the club and achieved everything that there is to achieve,” Carney explained with pride, as he now takes time to weigh up where the next career adventure will take him. Sydney FC are A-League betting favourites for a third consecutive Premiership title at 5/4 odds, and even though the team fell just short last season, they’re also 7/2 outright favourites for the 2018/19 Grand Final.

“I’ve played with Steve and known him a long time. I’m sure he will do a fabulous job with the team,” Carney told the official Sky Blues website, confident that Corica will maintain the challenge for silverware at Sydney FC. However, the new manager has plenty of work to do during pre-season, reshaping his squad following other notable departures, including Anthony Kalik and Fabio Ferreira.

One fantastic piece of news for the new management team has already been confirmed, after Bobo penned a new deal to remain at Sydney FC. The Brazilian scored 27 goals in 28 Premiership games, achieving a phenomenal 36 goals in 37 appearances in all competitions during the 2017-18 campaign.

“Bobo has shown time and again his ability in front of goal,” a delighted Corica told Fox Sports. “There is no doubt he is amongst the greatest strikers to have appeared in the A-League,” he underlined, after the 33-year-old signed a deal which keeps the player at Sydney FC for at least another 12 months.

As for the Golden Boot winner himself, Bobo is full of enthusiasm about continuing his successful relationship. “Sydney FC is a great club, we have had two fantastic seasons, so to have earned another contract is an excellent outcome for me and my family,” he commented, content to remain in Australia and undoubtedly, the opportunity to continue banging in more A-League goals.

Over the coming weeks, there will be plenty of work to occupy Corica, as he puts the final pieces in place towards what promises to be another exciting season for Sydney FC. “We have a strong nucleus of players to build on to continue our success and we will be working hard on other areas we need to strengthen,” the 45-year-old coach highlighted, confident that his team will be challenging for A-League honours again during the 2018-19 campaign.
